The Daggerfall Map Project, also known as the Iliac Bay Viewer, is a way to show people the world of Daggerfall in an easy-to-access manner. This tool renders the entire Iliac Bay (all ~320,000 km² of it) as explorable 3D terrain. The goal was to allow people to fly from a full-map overview down to ground level seamlessly, while retaining the graphics of Daggerfall as close as possible.
The map of Daggerfall has gained a mythical reputation online for being "the largest video game world ever". However, I don't believe it should be mythical, I want people to experience it for themselves!
This viewer is heavily influenced by the work of Daggerfall Unity. The idea for this project came while jumping around that world and wanting to see more. I want to extend a huge thank you to Gavin Clayton (Interkarma), who spent years of his life reverse-engineering Daggerfall's cryptic file formats and releasing the work under an MIT license.
My gratitude is also extended to everyone who contributed to Daggerfall Unity and its mods, including Hazelnut, Nystul, Pango, Allofich, TheLacus, MeteoricDragon, KABoissonneault, and jefetienne. From one fan to another, thank you.
Julian LeFay is known as the "Father of The Elder Scrolls". Along with Ted Peterson, LeFay was the driving force behind Daggerfall. He was the Lead Programmer for Arena, and the Project Leader and Senior Programmer for Daggerfall. LeFay wrote XnGine, the engine for Daggerfall. The Elder Scrolls deity Julianos is named after him. Todd Howard stated that Julian LeFay "was the driving force in the creation of The Elder Scrolls and the foundations of Bethesda as a game studio", saying that "simply put, without Julian, we would not be here today".
Julian passed away from cancer on July 22nd, 2025. I have a profound respect for him and his work, and I hope that he would approve of this project.
